Bleach is a Japanese anime TV series that was adapted from the manga (Japanese comic) of the same name written and drawn by Tite Kubo. It was produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Noriyuki Abe. Bleach aired on TV Tokyo from October 2004 to March 2012, spanning 16 seasons and 366 episodes total.

The story follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who gets the powers of a Soul Reaper from another Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki. As a Soul Reaper, Ichigo defends people from evil spirits and helps guide dead souls to the afterlife. Bleach is one of the Weekly Shōnen Jump’s most popular and best-selling manga. It is known for its stylish action scenes and for putting unique twists on common themes found in shōnen manga/anime.

Bleach was awarded the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shonen category in 2005. Bleach has sold over 120 million copies worldwide with an average sales per volume of 1.62 million, which makes Bleach the 6th best-selling series of all time from Weekly Shonen Jump.

Bleach Plot

Ichigo Kurosaki is an average high school student from Karakura Town who can see ghosts. His life changes forever when a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki shows up in his room one night. She is injured while protecting Ichigo’s family from a monstrous spirit known as a Hollow. To save his family, Ichigo agrees to take Rukia’s Soul Reaper powers temporarily.

Now with the abilities of a Soul Reaper, Ichigo must help guide lost souls to the afterlife and protect people from attacking Hollows. He discovers there is a whole world of spirits that regular people can’t see. Rukia helps train Ichigo to use his new powers to battle the dangerous Hollows while she tries to regain her own strength.

But Rukia’s transfer of power to Ichigo is illegal in the Soul Society, the realm of the spirit beings. She is arrested and sentenced to death for breaking the rules. Ichigo is determined to rescue her from this fate. He and his friends travel to the Soul Society and have to fight against the powerful Soul Reaper captains.

Bleach Review:

Bleach is an action-packed supernatural adventure that offers something for both shonen battle fans and those who appreciate compelling character drama. The story centers on Ichigo Kurosaki, a high schooler who becomes a “Soul Reaper” and protects spirits from monstrous “Hollows.”

Ichigo is a great protagonist – stubbornly brave, loyal to a fault, and hiding some mysterious origins. The supporting cast is fantastic too, from the soulful Rukia who kicks off Ichigo’s journey to fan-favorites like the cynical Uryu and gentle healer Orihime.

The world and lore of Bleach also intrigue. We learn about the Soul Society, the Hollows’ sinister Hueco Mundo realm, the competing Squads of Soul Reapers, and more. There are plenty of mysteries, surprises, and reveals that keep viewers enthralled.

Of course, Bleach also delivers spectacular action sequences. Ichigo clashing swords with captains, Arrancar warriors, or powerful Hollows are animated and paneled with kinetic energy. The powers and abilities are inventive too, like Zanpakuto swords with unique spirits and forms.

While Bleach Anime is not perfect – the pacing drags at times, and some plot points retread ground – it remains an addictive supernatural adventure. Memorable characters, an engrossing world, and thrilling action make Bleach a solid option for action shonen fans. Its long run gave it time to develop into a modern anime/manga classic.
