Kenshin Himura (Age: 28 – Start of Series; 33 – End of Series)
Kenshin Himura is the complex protagonist of the anime Rurouni Kenshin. He was born on June 20th, 1849 and 158 cm tall.
Known as the legendary Hittokiri Battosai, one would expect Kenshin to have a dominating presence upon hearing about him. In reality, however, he is the exact opposite as Kenshin is very kind and humble.
He has taken a vow not to kill others but that doesn’t mean he won’t teach evil-doers a lesson. He also shows shades of his past self whenever those he loves are in danger. His selflessness, inner torment, and innately compassionate nature have made him one of the finest protagonists in both anime and manga.
Kaoru Kamiya (Age: 17 – Start of Series; 22 – End of Series)
Kaoru is the female protagonist of Rurouni Kenshin as well as his main love interest. She was born on June 1862 and is 155 cm in height.
Kaoru is a beautiful woman who is shown to have a very strong will from the beginning. In a corrupt world, she works very hard in order to protect her struggling dojo. Her workload is significantly reduced once Kenshin joins her and we see her bold side tone down while she embraces her femininity and even blushes several times around Kenshin. While she might also seem childish in several instances, Kaoru wholeheartedly believes in her style of swordsmanship and puts in her all to pass it down to students. With a plethora of characteristics right from needlessly violent to extremely sweet, she is undeniably one of the stars of the series.
Sanosuke Sagara (Age: 18 – Start of Series; 23 – End of Series)
Rurouni Kenshin has a fantastic cast of main characters apart from Kenshin himself. The best among these according to many is Sanosuke Sagara. He was born on February 18th, 1860 and his height is 179 cm.
Sanosuke was introduced as a person who doesn’t give a lot of thought to his actions and craves a good fight. After joining Kenshin’s group, he begins to see the reason behind his values and decides to aid him in his mission. With his height, strength, and skills, Sanosuke is also no ordinary fighter, and most who come to face him have a hard time. His development and purpose is one of the biggest accomplishments of the series.
Yahiko Myoujin (Age: 10 – Start of Series; 15 – End of Series)
Yahiko is the youngest member of our main group of characters as well as one of Kenshin’s closest friends. He was born on June 1868 and is 127 cm tall.
Due to his upbringing, Yahiko was a defiant and mean-spirited young boy filled with cynicism and hate. After meeting Kenshin who helps him in solving many of his problems, Yahiko’s negative energy dissipates bit by bit. Just like any other boy from his age during the age of Samurais, Yahiko is filled with pride and independence.
He can be short-tempered and violent but is also very trustworthy. Due to the maturity, he gained from the streets, Yahiko does not hesitate when it comes to fighting to protect his friends.
Hajime Saitou (Age: 34 – Start of Series; 39 – End of Series)
Hajime Saitou is a stickler for the rules as well as a long-time rival of Kenshin. He was born on February 18th, 1844, and is 183 cm in height.
As a loyal investigator, Hajime has often gotten in the way of Kenshin and proved to be an obstacle. He is a skilled and ruthless fighter who has no problem killing those who get in his way.
When a common enemy shows up later in the series, Hajime is also willing to team up with Kenshin in order to fulfill his mission. Being a serious man, Hajime is a perfect depiction of a man from that time period and is one of the more memorable characters of the series.
Soujirou Seta (Age: 10 – Start of Series; 15 – End of Series)
Soujirou is a supremely skilled swordsman who worked under Makoto Shishio. He was on September 18th, 1861 and his height is 163 cm.
He is a very obedient follower who hardly ever shows emotion and can be seen showing a light smile on his face. With his calm demeanor, he makes for a very difficult opponent no matter who he’s facing. After meeting Makoto, he came to believe in a “survival of the fittest” philosophy while doing all he could to help his master achieve his goals.
Makoto Shishio (Age: 29)
Makoto Shishio is one of the main antagonists of Rurouni Kenshin and is also one of the main contributors to what makes the series so good. He was born on August 13th, 1848, and is 170 cm tall.
As a villain, Makoto Shishio is very twisted and ruthless. He is cold-blooded and does not hesitate to do whatever it takes to complete his objective. At the same time, he also has a sadistic personality and a sense of humor which is often the source of fear for his enemies. Adding his fearsome appearance to his supreme intellect, Makoto is one of the toughest challenges that Kenshin had to face.
Seijuurou Hiko (Age: 43)
Seijuurou Hiko is the teacher of the protagonist, Kenshin Himura. He was born on October 1st, 1836, and is 189 cm tall.
Seijuurou is one of the most unique characters in the series and is very weird in his own way. He often manipulates Kenshin using embarrassing events and makes a lot of jokes and sarcastic comments. He is also not one to needlessly converse with others and believes he can do anything he sets his mind to. However, similar to many of the other teachers in anime and manga, Seijuurou is also very caring towards his disciples and gets serious whenever he sees those close to him in danger. During such moments, he does not hold back on killing people and believes it to be a means to an end.
Misao Makimachi (Age: 16)
Misao Makimachi is a talented Kunoichi and a dedicated follower of Aoshi Shinomori. She was born on November 24th, 1863, and is 149 cm tall.
Misao is a very energetic girl with a vast amount of potential in fighting. She is very bright and persistent, especially when it comes to facing enemies. She also leads to several comical instances with her personality and quick temper. It is always a joy to see her spend time with the main cast of characters as well.
Aoshi Shinomori (Age: 26 – Start of Series; 31 – End of Series)
Aoshi Shinomori is the strong and intelligent leader of the elite group known as theOniwabanshu. He was born on January 1853 and his height is 182 cm.
Aoshi is a very calculating and smart individual who was able to rise through the ranks at a very young age. Beneath his cold expressions is a very passionate individual who loves the members of his group. Together with his amazing talent for fighting, he chases for victory mercilessly in battle.
