Haikyuu Season 5 Release Date
Update: 09/26/2023 – Much to the delight of the fans, Production I.G. has confirmed that Haikyu!! FINAL Movie Series Part 1 – Haikyu!! THE MOVIE: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump is scheduled for February 16th in Japan.
In August 2022, Production I.G. announced that Haikyuu Season 5 will be adopted into a two-part movie instead of an anime TV series. The expected names of the movies are –
- Haikyu!! THE MOVIE: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump (Confirmed)
- Haikyuu!!: The Final Battle (Not confirmed)
These movies will conclude the Haikyuu story and will feature the final volleyball matches with Shoyo Hinata and the others trying to emerge as the best high school team.
Will Haikyuu Movies Properly Cover the Remaining Story?
So far, the 4 seasons of the Haikyuu anime have adapted 292 manga chapters in 85 episodes. But there are 402 total chapters in the manga.
That means there are 110 chapters left to adapt into just two movies. So, if the production wants to adopt the source material as it is, each movie would have to cover about 55 chapters.
In the TV show, they usually adapted 3-4 chapters per 20-minute episode. Condensing 55 chapters into a 2-and-a-half-hour movie means there won’t be enough time.
Thus, hardcore fans are worried that the movies won’t be able to properly tell the rest of the story in just 2 movies.
But it’s not all bad news!
Some fans think the movies will have higher production values and animation to make up for the quicker pace.
But they agree that they desperately want the rest of the Haikyuu story animated, regardless of the format.
What happened in Haikyuu so far?
The Haikyuu manga concluded in 2020 after 402 chapters. The anime currently has 4 seasons spanning 85 episodes.
Season 1 introduced the Karasuno High School volleyball team and their goal to make it to nationals after years of decline. Talented but short Hinata joins forces with genius setter Kageyama. Together with the upperclassmen, they start rebuilding the team. They defeat rivals like Tsukishima and overcome challenges from Date Tech’s iron wall.
In Season 2, we see Karasuno continue to grow and defeat strong opponents like Johzenji and Wakutani. Hinata and Kageyama improve their quick attacks as the team finally makes it to Spring Nationals by beating Shiratorizawa and Ushijima in a close 5-set match.
Season 3 follows Karasuno at Nationals where they face difficult opponents like Inarizaki and their twins the Miya brothers. After a tough back-and-forth match, Karasuno wins in the 3rd set. They next defeat Kamomedai and Hoshiumi, a player dubbed the Little Giant. Karasuno finishes in the top 4 by losing to Itachiyama in the semifinals.
Season 4 shows the preparation for the next Nationals. Hinata joins a youth training camp and a Shiratorizawi camp to improve his skills. The team has practice matches against Date Tech, showing their growth. The season ends right before the long-awaited match between rivals Karasuno and Nekoma, called the Battle at the Garbage Dump.
